Particular interest attaches to this talk for housewives in this country, for both the similarities and differences between English and American homes are rooted in a common tradition. English listeners will hear how the average American housewife copes with familiar problems of house management, and what use she makes of the many mechanical aids at her disposal.

Guy Ropartz , born in 1864, comes of an old Breton family. His master was Cesar Franck , whose declared disciple he is. These two influences have coloured all his music, dramatic and absolute. Yet., although Franck is his model, and Breton folk-song at the root of his inspiration, his compositions show strong originality, combined with a character that is both individual and wholly French. This sonata, composed in 1907 and the first of two, is based upon Breton themes set in a classical frame.

After a very full survey of the last hundred years' struggle for slave emancipation this series comes this week to a practical examination of life and labour conditions in countries where slaves have gained freedom. This talk will describe the welfare of the descendants of freed slaves in the West Indies and America. In the West Indies, negroes, under the guidance of European advisers, have founded industries, laid down plantations, built schools, churches, and libraries.
