Guy Ropartz , born in 1864, comes of an old Breton family. His master was Cesar Franck , whose declared disciple he is. These two influences have coloured all his music, dramatic and absolute. Yet., although Franck is his model, and Breton folk-song at the root of his inspiration, his compositions show strong originality, combined with a character that is both individual and wholly French. This sonata, composed in 1907 and the first of two, is based upon Breton themes set in a classical frame.
