CHOPIN'S PIANOFORTE SONATAS
Played by LESLIE ENGLAND
Sonata in C minor, Op. 4 (Posth.)
1. Allegro maestoso ; 2. Menuetto : Allegretto ; 3. Larghetto ; 4. Finale : Presto
Chopin's Sonata No. 1 in C minor was composed in 1828 when the composer was eighteen years of age, but it was not published until after his death in 1851. It is, however, little more than a good student's exercise with quite an attractive slow movement and minuetto.
Chopin did not attempt another full-dress sonata until twelve years later when he produced the Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor. Now Chopin is often characterised as a composer of essentially effeminate music, because of its preponderance of grace, gentleness, and of a certain limpid sentiment. That he could be masculine in the sense of constructing music on a big style and of expressing powerful and turbulent emotions is evidenced by this fine sonata, which for imagination and constructive skill is one of the finest specimens of nineteenth century romantic music. The last sonata, No. 3 in B minor, appeared in 1845, but while the wealth and beauty of the melodic ideas are almost on a level with those of the B flat minor sonata, there is a considerable falling-oft in constructive power.
