Tonight's variety bill is really varied : it includes a soprano, a famous male duet, a ventriloquist patter act, a bird-imitator, a straight comedian, and a famous impersonator. Miss Rosa Barty, a charming light singer, makes a welcome return to the microphone. Alec Shaw, the Scots bird-man who imitates the cries and songs of owls, curlews, nightingales,and thrushes, came to broadcasting from the Windmill Theatre. Bert Copley is a Yorkshire comedian. Mr. Flotsam and Mr. Jetsam are as sonorous and as melodious as ever; while there is always a warm welcome for Clarice Mayne whether she is singing in her own style or imitating other favourites. The B.B.C. Dance Orchestra, which celebrated its first anniversary earlier in the week, plays throughout the programme.

In the early part of 1846, Berlioz was arranging a concert at Budapesth, and was strongly advised by a local amateur to lend the programme something of a national flavour and, if possible, to incorporate in one of the pieces a real Hungarian tune. He selected this march and arranged it for orchestra with such success that the piece was received with tremendous enthusiasm. Berlioz determined, accordingly, that it must, by hook or by crook, find its way into his Damnation of Faust, and to that end invented a whole new episode of the story which had no place in the original. 
The libretto was sternly criticised at the time, and defended by Berlioz with all his accustomed vehemence. But no such consideration affects the popularity of the March ; it is, indeed, one of the most stirring pieces of orchestral martial music which we possess.
