Unlike some of the unknown workers, described by Mr. Hugh Thomas, the lavender grower has a permanent market for his produce. Lavender came to England from the shores of the Mediterranean in the days of Elizabeth, and is cultivated commercially in Surrey, Hertfordshire, and Kent. Mr. Thomas describes the work on a lavender farm in Kent, where oil of lavender is distilled and constant skilled attention paid to improving the strain.

LT.-COL. JOHN BUCHAN , novelist, historian, soldier, politician, and sportsman, has been fortunate enough, as he says, to have been born and bred in the shadow of the Scott tradition. In his recent life of Scott ho has attempted a valuation of the man and his work after the lapse of a hundred years. It was said of Scott that he reminded the Scotland of his time of things that should never have been forgotten, and it is peculiarly fitting that the most popular Scots writer of today should perform a similar office for his great predecessor.
