Mr. J. L. HAMMOND :' British Leadership after Waterloo ' (continued)
THROUGHOUT the early and middle years
JL of the nineteenth century economic theory and practice in Great Britain was dominated by what is known as ' The Manchester School.' The term connotes a doctrine of world progress through the railway and the ' loom. The followers of the school pinned their faith to the idea of the world as a single economic unit, and of commerce as a new bond between nations rather than a cause of friction. In this talk Mr. J. L. Hammond. continuing his survey of this nation's rise to a place of dominating commercial and industrial power, discusses the Manchester School from all angles, contrasting its influence in colouring the mind of the nation with its practical limitations.
