Mors et Vita
A Sacred Trilogy
Written and composed by Charles Gounod
Gounod was by nature something of a religious mystic, and early in his career was within a stop of entering the priesthood. Towards the end of his life he practically devoted himself to the composition of sacred works, and secured in England a following of people who felt that he had, by so doing, atoned for a lifetime spent in the secular frivolity of opera-making. Both The Redemption (1882) and Mors et Vita (1885), first produced at Birmingham Festivals, were welcomed- with open arms by British choral societies, and were cherished favourites for many years.
