The Welsh Rhapsody of Edward German is one of his best works. It was written in 1904 for the Cardiff Musical Festival. A facetious writer in a contemporary journal said that 'During the composition of this famous Welsh Rhapsody Mr. Edward German ate nothing but Welsh rare-bits, drank nothing but Welsh ale, and slept with a copy of "Wild Wales" under his pillow However, W.H. Scott, in his official biography of the composer, tells us that a Welsh friend gave him the idea for the work by lending him a couple of volumes of Welsh folk songs.
The Welsh Rhapsody opens with a movement based on the air 'Loudly proclaimed o'er Land and Sea'; this is followed by a Scherzo-like movement based on the tune 'Hunting the Hare' and 'Bells of Aberdovey'. The slow section is founded on ' David of the White Rock"; and the Finale on 'Men of Harlech'. Only the Finale being played in this programme.
