Out of pity Mrs. Freeman bought a lot of unsuitable furniture from Mrs. Owen to sell at the antique shop, and Vicky Clare lost her temper. Mrs. Dale told Vicky Sally would probably go to America to live; Vicky gossiped at 'Stephanie' and Harvey Hichens heard the rumour and tackled Sally; she imagined her mother had betrayed her confidence and had a row with Mrs. Freeman. 'Merrie England' opened and the Krautzes arrived to spend Christmas at Virginia Lodge.
