Mrs. Freeman arrived home from Italy. Elsie told her about Henry's sea-lions and Mrs. Freeman went to tell Henry exactly what she thought of the idea. Todhunter was threatened with a breach of promise action by Yvonne's irate mother. Mrs. Owen was better and Tony Coppard drove her back to Gwyngarredd, much to the Dales' displeasure. Bob was upset Caradoc refused to make things up between them and he apologised to Mrs. Owen for his behaviour over Caradoe at the garage.

In April 1949 the frigate H.M.S. Amethyst, on a routine trip on the Yangtse river, suffered considerable damage and heavy casualties from Chinese Communist gunfire. This is the .story of the ordeal undergone by that gallant ship's company until the dramatic night of July 30, when it was decided to attempt an escape.
