When James Pearson arrives in Dunedin to register his and Sam Jolly 's claim in Gabriel's Gully, he finds that they have become victims of a claim-jumper. With no legal redress, he decides to appeal to the other diggers for support-and he might have succeeded but for the intervention of his old enemy, Andrew Wilson. Meanwhile, young Jane and Robert Pearson have been left at the camp with Martha-when, to their horror, she is abducted by Steve the Squealer and his partner, Harold.
