In April 1949 the frigate H.M.S. Amethyst, on a routine trip on the Yangtse river, suffered considerable damage and heavy casualties from Chinese Communist gunfire. This is the .story of the ordeal undergone by that gallant ship's company until the dramatic night of July 30, when it was decided to attempt an escape.
