Vicky told Mrs. Dale that she had decided to settle permanently in Parkwood Hill. Mrs. Freeman went to stay with Gwen and travelled to Wales with Mrs. Owen and David. Grandfather Dale waited at Virginia Lodge for Alec to return from a business trip. On Alec's arrival, however, Miriam rushed over to see Grandfather. Later, he reported that she had begged him to keep Carlton at King's Acre, whatever happened. He returned to Scotland without seeing Alec.
