'Nights of Gladness,' in its fourteen previous chapters, has covered a wide and colourful field. Now, as we near the close of the present edition, the Concert Orchestra and the resident 'Nights of Gladness' company are able to concentrate on some of the items requested by the large and faithful audience of playgoers and music-lovers. Listeners have reminded 'The First Nighter' of two composers who have not, until this week, been represented. They are Leo Fall, composer of 'The Dollar Princess' and Jean Gilbert, who wrote the music for that delightful show, 'Katya the Dancer,' which was a success at the Gaiety Theatre in IMS with Gene Gerrard. The music of Vivian Ellis and George Posford (both of whom have figured in earlier programmes) will also be heard, the pieces chosen being 'And So To Bed' and 'Magyar Melody' respectively.
A memory of an older success, 'San Toy' - which has nevertheless enjoyed numerous revivals and is beloved by amateurs - underlines our gratitude for the many Nights of Gladness for which we have to thank Sidney Jones. (G.P.)
