At three o'clock this afternoon the world's first regular jet air-liner service is introduced when the B.O.A.C. 'Comet' leaves London Airport on the 6,724-mile flight to Johannesburg. Charles Gardner, the BBC's Air Correspondent, is on board and, with Raymond Baxter, describes the take-off.
It is hoped to broadcast reports of the arrival of the 'Comet' in Rome this evening and in Johannesburg tomorrow afternoon.

Born in Lancashire, he started work in the cotton mills as a half-timer at the age of twelve.
