A programme for children under five
Recently we received a request from rhe mother of a four-year-old girl to repeat a story about a little black hen who is lonely. In the end she has some chicks of her own and says to them: " Oh, how I love you, cluck! cluck! cluck! " My little girl thinks that last bit is lovely, and has been patiently waiting for the story to be told again.' Almost simultaneously came a letter on behalf of another little girl, with a similar request, and adding: ' She particularly liked the piece where the little hen ran across the farmyard and the piano played tinkling music.' We were interested in these glimpses of the differing appeals of the same story for different children, signalling as they do the marked individualities of our listeners though they are as yet but ' under-fives.' The two parts of the story by E. E. Ellsworth will be told again tomorrow and on Wednesday. Another request was less easy to fulfil. ' Please '― and it was a small girl who wrote— 'please have a cowboy story.' We hope that Friday', tale, by Ivy Russell , and slightly deceptively called The Picnic,' comes near enough to her desire.

Last Saturday Gwen had her engagement party. The Dates were very concerned because rumours were circulating Parkwood Hill that a new road was going to be built through Laurel Road and probably Virginia Lodge would have to be pulled down. Mrs. Freeman decided to petition against it and asked Maud French to help her. Maud French became very interested and wanted to have an 'organised campaign.' Mrs. Dale had visions of Maud arriving complete with secretary and staff and commandeering Dr. Dale's surgery. Mr. Fulton continued to be tiresome towards Gwen and said he wanted her to go to Ireland with him the week she had arranged to go to Italy with Sally and Mrs. Freeman. He left her to decide whether she would go with him or whether he would have to get a new secretary.
