Friday Night is Music Night at the Seaside
Every summer the BBC Concert Orchestra visits South Coast resorts to present a programme of music for families on holiday as well as for listeners to the Light Programme. This year is no exception, but regular listeners to Friday Night is Music Night will not be deprived of their usual fare, since Sidney Torch and the Friday Night team of Cherry Lind, Madge Stephens, John Lawrenson, the Friday Knights under their director John McCarthy, and pianist and organist William Davies will be travelling with the orchestra. There are four 'ports' of call; tonight, in The Dome, Brighton; July 8 in the De la Warr Pavilion, Bexhill, where our programme is part of the opening concert in Bexhill's own Festival of Music; September 2 in the Leas Cliff Hall, Folkestone; and September 9 in the Assembly Hall, Worthing.
Joining the regular team tonight is the Band of the Welsh Guards conducted by Captain H. A. Kenney, Director of Music. William Davies is the soloist in Sidney Torch's arrangement for organ and orchestra of Widor's famous Toccata; Friday Night's Star Singers will be featured in music ranging from operatic repertoire to the music of Rodgers and Hammerstein, and the Friday Knights will contribute a humorous and harmonious medley.
So, whether in The Dome, Brighton, or tuned in to the Light Programme, join us at 8.40 p.m. when Jimmy Kingsbury heralds Friday Night is Music Night at the Seaside.
