A programme for children under five
What's in a name? 'Dafcrnec,' 'Daphne Oxen,' 'Dappy Oxey' — it makes no difference to our under-fives that many of them get no nearer to the real name than versions like these, for the person they all have in mind is the same, their 'story lady,' Daphne Oxenford, who comes hack to the microphone today to tell them stories for another month.
Among this week's tales are four by Ruth Simonis. We mention today's called "The Penguins' Picnic," because mothers whose children have not yet met a penguin may like to take the opportunity of introducing them beforehand, by picture or drawing, to these odd-looking creatures in their black coats and white waistcoats.
Tomorrow's story probably needs no introduction to most of our regular listeners, for, boys and girls alike, they are constantly asking to hear again about the big ship's foghorn which caught a cold, and Jim, the boy who cured it. We think, too, that they will enjoy the one they hear on Wednesday called "How the Foghorn joined the Ship" and the one on Thursday which tells how the foghorn was lost and found.
