A programme for children under five
Of all the pieces we have so far played as opening music for these programmes, the ' Chinese Dance ' from Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker Suite ' seems most immediately and lastingly to have engaged the attention of our young audience, so we hope they will be happy to welcome it back once again this week. For one little boy it created a special association, and, incidently, gave us a most interesting illustration not only of an individual child's interpretation of a piece of music, but of that kind of knitting together of experience which we call integration. ' At the age of three,' writes his mother, he went to the seaside, and had a never-to-be-forgotten ride on the Big Wheel. The first time he heard the Chinese music he said: "It's my Big Wheel "; and now he listens entranced to the music, and once again lives over his exciting ride. On one occasion the BBC Orchestra played it, and he heard it as he was playing in the garden. He ran in, sat listening intently, kept saying: " My Big Wheel goes faster, faster, faster," and was quite carried away for a few moments.'
