Quite a number of words in our language have "come down in the world". Charity, for instance, and simplicity. The word "simple", when it first appeared in English literature stood for a noble thing; but no one likes to be called "simple" today. In which sense was the teaching of Jesus Christ simple? When we say that he preached a "simple gospel", do we mean that it is superficial and easy, or deep-going and difficult? In today's Service, listeners are invited to think about our Lord's ministry of teaching and judge for themselves.
