Delves House provides a dignified and comfortable retirement for 145 elderly men and women in eight Kensington houses. The single rooms may be furnished by their occupants and there is nursing attention for minor ailments. In response to great demand a ninth house has been purchased and it is towards the cost of this that the appeal is being made.

Dr. John's letter arrives and he writes Lucy several more. He takes her to the theatre where there is a fire and he rescues a young lady. Lucy has no letter for seven weeks, then one comes from her godmother asking her to meet some 'auld acquaintances.'
