CO-OPERATIVE ANIMALS
2; Social Amoebas by Brian Shaffer of the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge
We are all societies of living, co-operating cells, but we are so complex that the interactions between individual cells are difficult to study. Social amoebas (or ' slime moulds ') are much simpler. They lead alternately solitary and social lives, and the way they ' team up,' when necessary, can be investigated directly.
