Fifty years ago Rutherford announced his discovery of the nuclear structure of the atom. Now scientists are beginning to understand the structure of still smaller and more fundamental objects. The proton and neutron are revealed not as simple points but as little spheres containing electric charges and currents. Professor Hamilton describes these recent discoveries and discusses their significance.
