Jill Bennett and Donald Sinden in A Noise of Hunters
Family loyalty or public duty? How far should adherence to the one conflict with the obligation imposed by the other? This was Ruth Vale's dilemma, made all the more agonising in her case since the crime she was asked to condone was a particularly cold and callous one.
At 8.30
A sailor is knifed on Putney Heath while protecting his fiancée from three young thugs. The girl cannot give an adequate description of the attackers, and the only clue the police have to go on is a button torn from a black leather jacket. The clue is followed up and leads ultimately to the killer. But a complication arises when the inspector working on the case falls in love with the sister of the murderer.
It would be unfair to give away any more of the plot of A Noise of Hunters. Suffice it to say that Patrick Campbell's theme is the kind of agonising personal problem that can present itself when conscience, family loyalty, and duty toward's one's neighbour are in violent conflict.
Jill Bennett (Ruth Vale) won overnight fame in the whaling film Hell Below Zero. Now one of our leading screen, stage, and television actresses, she likes playing characters that are 'different,' and the radio productions in which she has been heard range from Sea-Wife to Ibsen's The Wild Duck. Donald Sinden (Mark), who began his stage career at Stratford-on-Avon, has played leading roles in the West End, on the screen (the 'Doctor' films, The Sidney Street Siege), and on television. Leonard Cracknell (Jim Vale), who is only twenty, got his first acting chance with Hornchurch Repertory Company and has lately been concentrating on television plays.
