In a round, granite tower of a coastal fort on an island off Sweden, Edgar, Captain of the Garrison Artillery, and his wife Alice, a former actress, have been living for twenty-five years. When Kurt, her cousin, joins them to take up his post as Quarantine Officer the Captain's cruelty and jealousy flare up, countered by his wife's hatred.
