Part 2
Symphonic Suite: Antar Rimsky-Korsakov
This suite is based on an Arabian tale. In the first movement the hero, Antar, roving disconsolate and embittered among the ruins of an old city, sees a gazelle attacked by an eagle and saves it. The gazelle is a fairy who grants him three wishes.
The second movement describes the joy of revenge; the third movement the joy of power; and the finale the joy of love.

The story of the Mons retreat
In August 1914 Kaiser Wilhelm II ordered his forces ' to exterminate first the treacherous British and walk over General French's contemptible little army.' Tonight's programme describes in the words of veterans of that army their memories of the fighting in the Mons retreat that followed.
