The story of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition told by the men who made it.
The great travel story of 1958 was that of the Antarctic crossing. Its distinction lay both in the magnitude of the achievement and in the tenacity of purpose of a group of explorers and scientists who adhered firmly to their programme despite all the rigours of the polar climate. In the words of Sir Francis Drake: 'There must be a beginning of any great matter, but the continuing unto the end until it be thoroughly finished yieldeth the true glory'.
