His subject in this programme is the 1930s, which in retrospect seem to constitute a recognisable literary period. He refers in his talk to two recent books by authors who made their names in the 1930s: 'The Shield of Achilles' by W. H. Auden and ' The Corected Poems ' of William Empson.

Part 6
Other parts played by members of the BBC Drama Repertory Company
Production by Hugh Stewart
After a separation of twelve years Soames Forsyte goes to see his wife Irene at her flat. He finds it hard to believe that there has been nobody in her life to give him cause for divorcing her. She treats him coldly, and he retreats in despair and fury. His heart is still set on marrying the French girl, Annette Lamotte , who, he hopes, will provide him with a son and heir.
Meanwhile, war is declared, and this brings a new subject for discussion at Timothy's house on the Bayswater Road, where all the family gather on such national occasions. To add to the excitement, June, the revolutionary daughter of Jolyon, turns up after an absence of ten years, in which she has travelled extensively in order to forget that her lover, Philip Bosinney , had deserted her for Irene and had met with such a tragic end.

7-The Genius of the Place
In this, the last of the lectures. Dr. Pevsner suggests that the English qualities he has defined equip this country better than any other to solve the most urgent of twentieth-century visual problems; the problem of town planning.
Pope instructed the eighteenth-century gentleman always to consult the genius of the place. If his advice can be boldly applied to the larger problem of the town, it could restore to it the variety, the surprise, and the beauty which it has lost during the last century or so.
