Dario Raucea (piano) Dario Raucea was born at Syracuse, of Italian parents, in 1912. Alfredo Casella first recognised his talents and taught him in Rome; Raucea afterwards went on to Vienna to continue his studies with Weingarten and Emil von Sauer, who was a pupil of Liszt. Following a tour of South Africa, in which he won glowing tributes, Raucea has made several very successful appearances in Manchester and Birmingham. H.R.

William Walton 's String Quartet, which is dedicated to Ernest Irving , has two extended movements (the first and the third), the second and fourth being shorter and slighter. The work was first performed, by the Blech String Quartet, on May 4, 1947, in the Third Programme; on the following day it received its first public performance at a BBC Chamber Concert.
