Part 1
The setting of this novel is the famous Caribbean Island of Saint-Jacques in the year 1902. Berthe de Rennes, who tells the story, was as a young girl governess to the children of her cousin the Count de Serindan, and most of the events described take place against the background of a Mardi Gras ball of unparalleled splendour and magnificence.
