Young Haraldsen was being pursued by the son of his father's old enemy, Lancelot Troth. He fled from his island home in the northern seas, and, with his little daughter, took refuge in England. Richard Hannay brought Haraldsen down to stay with him at his house in Sussex, and told his son, Peter John, to keep an eye open for any suspicious strangers.
