In the year 1806 Polly and Oliver, Sergent Trott, and Private Pilchard find themselves beside a wrecked travelling coach on a mountain road in Italy which is in the hands of Napoleon's troops. Somehow they must get through the enemy positions to the coast in time to save General Stewart from capture and their own regiment from annihilation. It is a perilous prospect but fortunately they have found some smart-cloths in the coach and a safe-conduct for two English spies.
