The heath of Ronald Adam's play is Hampstead Heath and the story is told by old
Mrs Pirbright, who recalls the various tenants in an old-fashioned Hampstead house where she has lived since before the 1914 war: the impoverished widow with her son who could not afford the training to become a great singer; the ex-officer (1927) with his loyal young wife who upholds his spirit in times of defeat; and finally (1939), the bohemian artist. A Wind on the Heath is really three plays in one, but they are linked together by the personality of the house and the personality of Mrs. Pirbright. (Stephen Williams)
Philip Treleaven introduces some of London's stage door-keepers who recall their memories of the theatre. The programme includes recordings from the BBC Recorded Programmes Library of some of the stars they have met
