In 1784, when Haydn was fifty-two and his fame was spreading all over Europe, he was asked to provide a set of six symphonies for the Concert de la Loge Olympique in Paris. During the next two years he wrote the symphonies Nos. 82 to 87, which have consequently become known as the ' Paris symphonies. No. 83 acquired the nickname ' La Poule,' probably because the second theme of the first movement, with its repeated grace-notes, suggested the clucking of a hen; but the symphony as a whole is more remarkable for qualities of vigour and drama.
The year in which Haydn' received this invitation, Mozart wrote six of his finest piano concertos. The first of these, in E flat (K.449), was dedicated to
Babette Ployer , one of his pupils, the daughter of the Archbishop of Salzburg's agent in Vienna. Mozart himself said that it did not belong to the same category as his earlier concertos, ' being of a quite peculiar kind, in that it is written for a small orchestra, rather than a large one.'
Schubert's first three symphonies, written before he was eighteen, cannot compare in power and originality with the songs of the same period, out the third is a captivating work, modelled on Haydn, with slow introduction and sparkling finale.

Appeal on behalf of the St. Francis Leper Guild by Father Agnellus Andrew O.F.M.
Contributions will be gratefully acknowledged and should be addressed to [address removed]
St. Francis Leper Guild was founded in 1895 to help missionaries throughout the world to alleviate the sufferings of the millions of people afflicted by the disease of leprosy.
Where Leper Settlements receive substantial support from their respective Governments, the Guild aims at providing some extra comforts for the patients. In many instances, however, rhe Settlements are entirely dependent on charity for their maintenance. In recent years the use of the new sulphone drugs in the treatment of leprosy has given new hope; but these drugs are expensive, hence the need for generous help towards providing them.
The entire annual balance of contributions to the St. Francis Leper Guild is distributed each year to Leper Settlements throughout the world.

A radio play in twelve parts by Peter Creswell founded on the novel ' Romance' by Joseph Conrad and F. M. Hueffer
3— ' Dona Seraphina ' with Ronald Sidney and David Kossoff Production by Frederick Bradnum
As the Thamar, carrying John Kemp , Carlos Diego , and Castro is approaching Kingston Harbour in Jamaica, John is warned by Nicholls, the sinister Nova Scotian second mate, to break with Carlos and on no account to approach Rio Medio. John's reply is interrupted by the ship's arrival in harbour. He leaves in the charge of the elder Macdonald, Rooksby's agent in the West Indies, and spends two years at Rooksby's sugar plantation.
Jamaica is torn by political strife between the Loyalists and the Separationists-a conflict embittered by Admiral Rowley's failure to deal with te pirates preying on rhe Colony's shipping trade. Kemp rescues the little hunchback David Macdonald , editor of the Separationist news-sheet, from rough handling by the Admiral and his cronies. He then accompanies him and Captain Williams of the Lion to see the public hanging of seven pirates handed over by the Cuban authorities as a sop to the Jamaican Government. Here he is accosted by Ramon, a Spanish storekeeper.
