Appeal on behalf of the Y.M.C.A., by General Sir Ronald Adam , Bt., G.C.B., D.S.O., O.B.E.

The Young Men's Christian Association was founded in London in 1844, and pioneered in many of the now well-established forms of youth work.
It is perhaps most widely known in this country for its work with H.M. Forces. This activity, which the Association began nearly seventy years ago and so extensively developed during the two world wars, is being maintained today over a very wide field, both at home and abroad. The Y.M.C A.'s continuing ministry to the young men ' 'called-up' for national service, together with its farm-training and sea-training schemes and its many hosteh for those living away from home, are fully in keeping with its tradition of service to the wider community of young people beyond its membership.

A story of a man of character by Thomas Hardy
Dramatised for broadcasting by Desmond Hawkins
Music composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams
6—' The Rivals'
Produced by Owen Reed in the BBC's West of England studios
From the moment that Susan Henchard came to Casterbridge, Michael Henchard strove to make amends for the wrong he had done her in the early days of their marriage. After a second marriage ceremony with her, he broke off his relationship with Lucetta Le Seur — his ' friend in Jerscy-and settled down to a normal family life. But the death of Susan put into his hands a letter which made a mockery of 'his good intentions and poisoned his relationship with Elizabeth-Jane, The daughter whose return had so pleased him became now the object of his anger and contempt. When she proposed to leave him and make a life of her own he raised no objection. Once again the Mayor of Casterbridge was a lonely man, at odds with existence. And at this moment a Miss Templeman came to Casterbridge and engaged Elizabeth-Jane as her companion. To Michael Henchard. however, she was better known as Lucetta Le Seur.
