A story of a man of character by Thomas Hardy
Dramatised for broadcasting by Desmond Hawkins
-Music composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams
5-' Lucetta
Comes to Casterbridge '
Produced by Owen Reed in the BBCs West of England studios
The happiness that Elizabeth-Jane had found at Casterbridge was soon clouded by a quarrel, which led Michael Henchard to dismiss Donald Farfrae from his service. As a competitor in business, Farfrae became an even greater object for Henchard's wrath, and Elizabeth-Jane could no longer entertain the hope that the young Scotsman would be regarded as an eligible suitor. It was doubly disappointing that the occasion which finally prompted this rupture between Henchard and his young manager was the public bail at which Farfrae had so nearly proposed to her.
In this unhappy situation the good sense of Susan Henchard might well have asserted itself, for she could recognise Farfrae'* excellent qualities. He had shown himself a most efficient manager of her husband's business: and he had her approval as a prospecuve husband for Elizabeth-Jane. Perhaps in time her more reasonable counsel might have prevailed. But the time for such action was to be shorter than she could have foreseen. And meanwhile the breach between Henchard and Farfrae widened.
