Cello Sonata in G minor, Op. 65 played by James Whitehead (cello) and Maria Donska (piano) A work by Chopin composed for any instrument other than the piano is something of a rarity, and the article on Chopin in Grove's Dictionary admits that in his treatment of other instruments the composer was not at his ease and that neither the Trio (Op. 8) nor this Cello Sonata represents him at his best. His two concertos, it is also claimed, are more effective when played on two pianos than in their original form. However. many lovers of Chopin will welcome this opportunity of forming their own judgments in the matter.
