The setting of the programme is a Services concert, at which men of the Army. Navy, and R.A.F. are listening to a medley of popular and traditional English tunes. To five contrasted members of this audience of fighting men, all on the eve of action, these songs evoke memories and associations which build a composite picture of England and the English at this decisive moment in . history.
