Debussy's Sonata for violin and piano, the third of a projected set of six sonatas for various instruments, was written in the winter of 1916-17, when the composer was suffering from an incurable disease. III as he was, Debussy played the piano part in the first performance in Paris (May 1917), with Gaston Poulet as the violinist. Debussy himself wrote of this sonata as ' one of those countless little intimate tragedies, that overwhelm you without making any more noise Than a rose shedding its petals, leaving the rest of the world at peace '.
