Concerto Pathetique, for two pianos played by Lucy Pierce and John Brennan
Liszt's Concerto Pathetique was originally written as a piano solo and the manuscript bore the following inscription : 'Grand solo written for the piano competition (Paris Conservatoire, 1850) '. In 1866, however, a new version appeared for two pianos dedicated to von Bronsart, one of Liszt's pupils. Although the music is brilliant, it is more a tone poem than a concerto in the strict meaning of the term. It contains some of Liszt's most beautiful ideas and as its title suggests the music is intended to have a dramatic significance, whch, however, was never disclosed by the composer.

Then for four years he ran the BBC Dance Orchestra, which was the first dance band to be televised in Britain. In 1936 he made a three-months tour in South Africa, covering an approximate distance of 2,575 miles. Payne and his orchestra are kept very busy now, as besides their programmes on the Home and Forces wavelengths, they do a number of Overseas broadcasts.
