During the last war Jack Payne organised a jazz band to entertain his fellow officers in the Royal Flying Corps, and when all the fighting was over his first important London engagement .was at the old Hotel Cecil. Then for four years he ran the BBC Dance Orchestra, which was the first dance band to be televised in Britain. In 1936 he made a three-months tour in South Africa, covering an approximate distance of 2,575 miles. Payne and his orchestra are kept very busy now, as besides their programmes on the Home and Forces wavelengths, they do a number of Overseas broadcasts.
