Jomo Kenyatta with John Freeman, Editor, New Statesman.

God created Gikuyu and Mumbi and placed them in Kikuyu land, but they were deceived by the European and their land was stolen from them. I will never abandon fomo; he has promised that our land shall be returned to us. Hymn 19 of the Kenya African Union Hymn Book used by Mau Mau
I have done my best and if all other people had done as I have done, Mau Mau would not be as it is now. You have made it what it is, not Kenyatta.
Kenyatta at his trial
Non-Africans who still want to be called bwana (master) should pack up and go, but others who are prepared to live under our flag are invited to remain.
Kenyatta at Dar Es Salaam, 1961
You have been too long in high and privileged positions. You must change your heart. Remember we are citizens of Kenya on an equal status and if you do that you will have nothing to fear.
Kenyatta at a luncheon in Nairobi, October 1961
I spent so many happy hours on the South Downs, a place where a man got time to think. I used to take my lunch to eat on the crest of the Downs and then walk down to have tea in Arundel by the castle.
Sometimes I gave four lectures a day to troops on lonely gun-sites on the coast. My subjects at that time were colonial affairs and anthropology.
Sunday Express
They're just two of my old friends. They were taken from me when I was arrested. I think the Governor thought I had all the juju in them.
