The action takes place at Hampton Court, in the City of London, and at Whitehall Palace. It is January 1666. Lord Sandwich and the Fleet have returned from sea with valuable prizes captured from the Dutch. Sandwich and Samuel Pepys have taken their share of the booty without waiting the authority of the Prize Commissioners. But there has been a public outcry and Sandwich has been relieved of his command. Samuel, however, has managed to cover his tracks and remains in favour.
The world-famous operatic baritone sings some of his favourite roles.
