"The Hands" - an Experiment
Thursday's play is a true experiment in television drama: a work which could be realised in no other medium than television. It has been conceived entirely, at every stage of writing and production, in terms of a coherent sequence of living images to express a private vision.

In the ordinary sense, it is not a play at all; there are no high dramatic peaks, no tense situations and intricate emotional conflicts. The hero - although this is too high a term for him - is an old man, Mr. Bottomley, living alone, a martyr to bronchitis and approaching his last hours.

Rob Inglis, the original creator of Mr. Bottomley and his bitter-sweet world, is a writer of integrity and promise. He came from Australia a year ago to learn about television, and started in the best possible place: on the studio floor, humping scenery and dodging the silent, tank-like cameras. He still works as a scene-man. At 24, he writes with considerable insight and with great compassion for the victims of life. (Robert Furnival)
