The Prince and the Pauper: 3 - The Beggars

Prince Edward, son of Henry VIII, and Tom Canty, the beggar are as alike as two peas. For fun, the prince changes clothing with Tom, and the two boys are mistaken for each other. The prince is chased from the palace and seized by John Canty, Tom's father.
Meanwhile Henry VIII dies, and Tom is hailed as King. Everyone thinks he has gone mad because he seems unable to remember his princely duties. John Canty thinks the same of Edward.
Tom rather enjoys the change, but Edward has a miserable time till a certain Miles Hendon, who thinks him a poor little mad beggar, befriends him and takes him to an inn. Miles goes out for a few minutes, leaving Edward asleep. He returns to find the bed empty. Where is Edward?

He is due back, as the play opens, from a year or so in the Orient-a period during which Sheila, exposed to the loneliness and temptations of big-city life, has allowed her low spirits to sabotage her usual high fidelity.
