When there is peace, the Polish pine woods might be an ideal setting for a love story. But when the Nazi flag is flickering on the skylines of the land, when the sudden yap of a dog in the yard awakens a cold feeling in the heart, Poland is not so romantic. However, we make a story from a phase in our lives, of things which, for some reason, burn themselves into the memory; in this case the sand, the pine woods, but above all the faces Which became the faces of Stepha, Jankowski, Radek, SS Scharfuhrer Ohlau...

War changed them: the romantic Stepha, the embittered Jankowski, gallant Radek who took to the forests. Understand the cold, unspoken threat which rots the soul of an occupied land and you begin to understand the change in Stepha, the defeat of illusions, the moral tragedy. But for Anton Jankowski forgiveness may seem impossible. Can the hero of a love story be a man who tries to buy escape with an act of treachery?
Whatever the answer, this is a story of the love - and unfortunately the hate - which does not alter 'when it alteration finds'. (F. Benedict)
