Philip Thornton

This is the first of six fortnightly talks to be given by Philip Thornton. They will consist of a description of the instruments that go to make up a modern orchestra and they will trace their history from primitive times. It is hoped that these illustrated talks will encourage an interest in orchestral music and will help the viewer to pick out the various instruments of the orchestra. In this, the first talk, Philip Thornton will deal with the stringed components, giving examples of original stringed instruments.

St. John Ervine's Anthony and Anna was first produced at the Playhouse in Liverpool in 1926. It was first staged in the West End in November, 1935, at the Whitehall Theatre, where it still attracts large audiences, after a run of more than two years. The three principal characters will come before the television camera this afternoon.
