From the table- top stage in an intimate nightclub to a full house at the Palladium, Desmond Carrington looks at the careers of entertainers who wrote the rule book and created their own unique style. This week's star in the spotlight is Anne Shelton.

In the early 1940s Anne Shelton began singing professionally with Ambrose and his Orchestra. It was wartime and very soon she was performing for personnel at their bases across Britain as well as broadcasting her own radio request programme, Calling Malta, on the BBC Overseas service.  At that time, a German song about Lili Marlene was popular and when Anne recorded an English version, it quickly led to her being called "the Lili Marlene girl".
 
Her biggest record hit was Lay Down Your Arms in 1956, the success of which kept Elvis Presley off of the number one spot for several weeks.  Anne remained hugely popular with those who had served during the war, and this fact led to her many contributions to the Not Forgotten Association over many years until her death in 1994.

Today, appropriately, it is she who is not forgotten, not least because of her warm and affectionate voice and gentle presence which helped millions to cope with one of the darkest times of the 20th century.

2/4. Veteran Radio 2 broadcaster Desmond Carrington profiles historically significant entertainers from the worlds of cabaret, nightclub, revue and theatre. He continues with Anne Shelton (1923-94), who during the 1940s performed for wartime personnel across Britain and hosted the request programme Calling Matta on the BBC Overseas service. Her English-language versions of Lili Marlene proved very popular, but not quite as signficant as her 1956 number one Lay Down Your Arms, which stopped Elvis Presley 's Hound Dog from reaching number one in the UK.

First published as The Wheel Spins, Ethel Lina White's novel was later renamed The Lady Vanishes following the popularity of an Alfred Hitchcock movie. And it's easy to see why Hitchcock found this novel so compelling and so well-suited to his particular brand of filmmaking. The plot is deceptively simple: a young woman meets an engaging stranger during a long railway journey, who later disappears, leading to mystery and deception. In episode one, Iris Carr is returning home from a holiday in Europe, unaware that her journey will be full of mystery, deception, confusion and danger!The novel was adapted for radio by Neville Teller and first broadcast on Radio 2 in 2006.

The Cory Band celebrate their 125th anniversary.

The Cory Band celebrate their 125th anniversary in concert with jazz trombone star Wycliffe Gordon and The Morriston Orpheus Choir. Hosted by Frank Renton.

Currently European, Brass In Concert and World Champions, the Cory Band are having a bumper 125th Year. This concert, recorded in St David's Hall Cardiff, forms the centre piece of their celebrations. 

Formed in 1884 in the Rhondda Valley as The Ton Temperance Band, their potential was quickly spotted by Sir Clifford Cory, then Chairman of the Cory Brothers Coal Company, whose offer of sponsorship led to a name change for the band. Tonight's conductor, Robert Childs, was appointed in 2000 and immediately led the band into a succession of acclaimed recordings and a string of competition victories including The British Open, Area, National and European Championships and most recently the 2009 World Championship Crown.

The concert features jazz superstar Wycliffe Gordon, who came to prominence with Wynton Marsalis's legendary Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra, the Morriston Orpheus Choir, and conductor Robert Childs. The repertoire includes the world premiere of Hail The Dragon, written especially by Philip Sparke; Adiemus from the hugely popular and talented pen of Karl Jenkins. Wycliffe Gordon also contributes some trombone fireworks in his own piece Me We and the choir join forces with the band in the classic Myfanwy and Danny Boy.

Frank Renton celebrates the 125th year of Cory with a concert recorded on 20 June in St David 's Hall in Cardiff. Robert Childs conducts the concert, which features jazz star trombonist Wycliffe Gordon.
