Fifty years after its release, Guy Barker explores the production and continuing legacy of Miles Davis' seminal 1959 album Kind of Blue. Features rare archive interviews.

In 1959 Columbia Records released Kind of Blue, the new LP by Miles Davis. It was a new sound for jazz, and the height of cool. Today, Kind of Blue continues to outsell the vast majority of new jazz albums.

It's not just the best-known Miles Davis album, it's one of the most familiar and influential sounds in jazz. But Kind of Blue is not just one of the greatest jazz albums ever made. It transcends genre. You can hear echoes of Kind of Blue in rock and electronica; the work of minimalist composers like Terry Riley and Steve Reich; and even the Godfather of Soul James Brown stole a riff from it for his hit single Cold Sweat. Kind of Blue is also a deeply personal album. With its distinctive mood and atmosphere, it has provided a soundtrack to pivotal times in many listeners' lives. 

50 years on, trumpeter Guy Barker explores why Kind Of Blue is such a phenomenon. He discovers how Miles Davis created his masterpiece in just two studio sessions, and with very little preparation. He also finds out how Kind of Blue fits into the musical, cultural and socio-political landscape of the late 1950s. And he hears from the musicians for whom Kind of Blue has been a huge influence on both their music and their lives. 

The documentary includes extracts of rare archive interviews with Miles Davis and pianist Bill Evans. Other contributors include drummer Jimmy Cobb, the last surviving member of the Kind of Blue band; pianist Herbie Hancock; singer and guitarist Chris Rea; singer and saxophonist Curtis Stigers; saxophonist Pee Wee Ellis and Allman Brothers drummer Jaimoe. We'll also hear from writers and critics including Ashley Kahn, Richard Williams, Stanley Crouch and Fred Kaplan; and the man who signed Miles to Columbia - producer George Avakian.

Tonight Marc travels back to 1992. In this year Prince Charles and Princess Diana publicly announced their separation; George H. W. Bush was televised falling violently ill at a state dinner in Japan, vomiting into the lap of Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa; and Betty Boothroyd became the first woman elected Speaker of the British House of Commons.

Also in 1992, pop star Cher found herself talking to Radio 1's Simon Bates following the success of her recent number one The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss). We hear a confessional Cher reflecting on her relationships with musicians Sonny Bono and Gregg Allman; her thoughts on I Got You Babe and the stardom it brought her; plus what it was like growing up in an idyllic California with two imaginary friends.

Series reassessing BBC archive music interviews, continues with a 1992 Radio 1 interview between Simon Bates and Cher in the wake of her surprise chart-topping 1991 cover of Betty Everett's 1964 hit The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss). The iconic singer reflects on the men in her life, growing up in California, and Sonny and Cher's 1965 perfect-pop gem I Got You Babe.
