5/8. Reggae enthusiast Mark Lamarr spins Jamaican discs.
8/8. As the pop single struggles to secure its niche in the digital era, Radio 2 singles out eight 45rpm records for their lasting value and influence, concluding with Marvin Gaye 's What's Going On. Recorded in 1970 during a low period in the singer's life, the moody anti-war single confounded Motown king Berry Gordy 's expectations when in early 1971 it spent five weeks at number one on the US R&B chart and, perhaps more crucially, three weeks at number two on the pop chart. Gaye then got the go-ahead to produce an entire album around the hit. The resulting album - also titled What's Going On - signalled a radical turning point in mainstream black music, and critics eventually embraced the LP as one of the finest ever. Save the Children was the one track from the album to chart as a UK single.
